Starting Your Own Home Wood Working Business

Geoff Mira

For those of us who enjoy working with wood for pleasure or a simple hobby taking this love of the wood working craft to a small home based business can be a smooth transition. From simple toys to fine handcrafted furniture is in big demand today.

Everywhere you look today you discover fine crafted wood products, many of them come from home based woodworking businesses. From the simple, such as boxes and shipping crates, to wooden toys. For the talented wood crafter the opportunities are wide open.

Before you start you wood working business do some research. Find out what your state and local laws and regulations are about opening a wood working business. Next find out what particular items are in demand in your local community and state. This will have a definite impact on the tools and supplies you will need to have on hand before you begin to produce your first wood working product. I would also advise you to join a local trade association that is directly connected to woodworking. In this way you will have support in what to do about advertising, trade shows and all events that will showcase your finer wood working pieces.

Finding a good supplier of various woods and wood working craft tools is essential. Never use the cheaper products. While they will give you an up front savings they will hurt you in the long run. Quality and craftsmanship, in the toy and furniture lines will keep your clientele coming back for years to come.

After you have built a relationship with a supplier it's time to build your home wood working business. This starts with advertising. Depending of your local zoning laws you maybe able to put up a sign out front advertising your wood working business, and don't forget to put your phone number on the sign. Many people see a business while driving by but don't have the time to stop in. Having your phone number out front makes it easier to contact you. The next and most popular way to advertise your home wood working business is to set up a web site. This way you can showcase your products and talents in ways out father's never could.

Speaking of our father's methods of advertising, there is always the trade shows, flea markets, and arts and crafts shows at fair grounds and major shopping malls. You should also show off your fine home wood working crafts at custom design, specialty, and unique furniture stores. Be sure not to over-book your home woodworking business or the old saying "he bit off more than he could chew" will be your fate. Maintain high standards of quality and you will have plenty of work from repeat clients.

We have already discussed advertising using, trade shows, arts and craft shows, and flea markets, but to increase the visibility of your home wood working business also consider the following outlets. Local bulletin boards, and trade magazines, and entering wood working contests to showcase your talents.

Your wood working business is only limited by your imagination. When clients ask you to do custom work be sure to check out copyrights. If a client wants a custom job that is copyrighted check with the holder of that copyright. Don't be afraid to check it out, many copyright holders will be glad to allow you to use their copyright at a fair rate. Then don't overlook your own designs and get them copyrighted. This will increase your home wood working business profits at no cost or labor to you.

The final area I will discuss will show you smaller and simpler ways to build you wood working business. Fashion and home decor trends are ways to enter into the artistic side of woodworking. Beautifully designed and crafted wooden bowls, accent pieces, sculptures and picture frames are
additional ways to increase your home woodworking business. Imagination and creativity are the only boundaries to your woodworking endeavor.
